Recreational Therapy
What is Recreational Therapy?
Recreational Therapy (RT) is a medical modality that utilizes therapy in the form of recreation, leisure and other activity based interventions to address the needs of individuals with disabling conditions as a means to improve well-being. Recreational therapy can facilitate improvement or maintenance of physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual functioning in order to achieve full participation in life and functioning in society.
Recreational therapists, at the Lighthouse, provide services through a variety of techniques and programs including, but not limited to, community outings, horticulture, arts and crafts, fitness, aquatic therapy, games, dance and movement, music, animal assisted therapy, therapeutic horseback riding, adaptive sports, and volunteering in the community. These activity based treatments provide a variety of benefits, such as, promoting endurance, confidence, restoring motor functioning, proper body mechanics, coping abilities, social skills, reducing stress, depression and anxiety.
